Individuals who want to become aromatherapy practitioners must undergo a training in various programs by a recognized and accredited school by respective governing agencies. There are certificate and diploma programs at which an aromatherapy practitioner may learn their trade.

There is an in depth study about the medical properties of essential oils, hydrosols and chemotypes, safety precautions, the chemistry of essential oils, toxicology and contraindications. and history of aromatherapy. Other related topics that are covered include anatomy, pathology, physiology and their associations with aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy students will learn the lymphatic drainage massage techniques, olfactory system, reflexology, emotions and memory, different stages of age, energy work, pregnancy, birth, acupressure, draping techniques, consultation, and assessment.

Aromatherapy students will also learn to clear the ear canal that can improve hearing and clear the sinuses. This procedure is known as auricular therapy or ear candling. One option that these students can learn is myomassology. Myomassology involves specialized massage techniques using aromatherapy.

Students will also study body mechanics, the techniques and benefits of Tuina Chinese massage, reflexology, Chinese cupping, craniosacral therapy, chair massage, acupressure, paraffin therapy, thalassotherapy and pregnancy massage. Other studies include Bach flower essences, hydrotherapy, cleansing, detoxification and oxygen therapy.

Reflexology is the study of bodywork using pressure points on the body for the beneficial effects to the health. Students will learn about specific conditions and their key areas for reflexology as well as the techniques for improving these conditions.
