Burning upper back pain is experienced by everyone at one time or another. Some of the most common causes are poor posture, stress, and long hours at the computer. The good news is that upper back burning pain can be relieved in many non-pharmaceutical ways.

There are many herbs that are used for upper back pain. One of the more common ones is devil’s claw because it is an anti-inflammatory herb and can be used up to three times a day. Ge Gen Tang is a natural Chinese herb that has traditionally been used for hundreds of years. White willow can be used as an immediate pain reliever, like ibuprofen. Make sure to check with your doctor if you are taking any medication to see if herbs will affect the medication in an adverse way.

Natural Oil Massage

Many people swear by the power of natural oil massages for burning upper back pain. Some of the better oils that are used are flaxseed oil and emu oil. Emu oil has heating sensations that can sooth the pain quickly. Combined with the tension relieving motions of massage, oil can be a very effective treatment for burning upper back pain.

Stretches

Stretches are an easy, always available cure for upper back pain that will strengthen your upper back muscles. Simple over-the-head stretches work well for loosening shoulder and upper back. Rolling the shoulders forward and back can also offer relief.

Sitting upright in an armless chair, keep your chin tucked in and shoulders down, pull your shoulder blades together, straighten (but don't arch) your upper back, and hold your chest high. Hold for 5 seconds. Relax. Repeat 10 times.

Cold and Heat Pads

Cold and heat pads are a very popular treatment for back pain. Cold pads should be applied first to reduce any swelling. Next, a heat pad should be applied to sooth the muscles. If you use the heating pad first it may inflame the muscles even more, so it is smart to start with cold. Today, there are cold and hot pads that can be applied to the skin and stick there, so that the user can have relief on the go.

Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and pilates are really long-term cures and preventative measures when it comes to all back pain. Moves such as mat stretches, Cat/Cow Variation to Child’s Pose, and the Airplane Pose can benefit anyone with back pains. These moves improve bad posture, lengthens tightened muscles, and strengthens the muscles. Overall back health is the ultimate cure for burning upper back pain.
