What is EFT Tapping?
The EFT Tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a combination of mind body medicine and acupuncture without the needles. EFT has been receiving a great deal of attention in recent years as doctors, psychologists and other health care professionals are beginning to fully realize its tremendous potential to combat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans as well as anxiety issues in many patients. EFT is a no meds, non-invasive method of emotional acupuncture that anyone can do.
Performed by using a series of tapping at specific points, EFT is based on the theory that emotional issues are due to unbalanced energy meridians. These meridians, taken from the ancient Chinese procedure, acupuncture, carry energy throughout the body. When one of the meridians becomes off balance or disturbed, emotional upsets occur, such as anxiety, depression, phobias, guilt and grief. How Is It Done?
EFT is performed by tapping on certain meridian points with the fingertips. This tapping stimulates the meridian points, thus bringing them back into balance and unblocking them so that energy is able to flow easily.
The patient taps on certain places on the body that correspond with the area or areas that give them trouble.
As the patient performs the EFT on the corresponding area, the symptoms begin to almost immediately subside. In many cases, the symptoms disappear completely and the effect usually lasts a rather long time.
EFT and PTSD
One of the most dramatic testimonies for EFT is the work that is being done with combat veterans suffering from PTSD. There are several studies that have been done that examined how EFT could aid soldiers who had the disorder. In the studies, soldiers from the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and Iraq were taught EFT tapping. Their responses were incredible.
The soldiers who learned and performed EFT reported that their symptoms of depression and anxiety decreased an average of 50% to 60%. In some cases, EFT worked to reduce the debilitating symptoms of PTSD when nothing else would. The soldiers reported feeling more relaxed, happier and they slept better.
Does It Work For Everyone?
While EFT does not work on everyone, it is quite effective on many people who try it. In fact, quite a few people on medication for emotional upsets who begin to do EFT on themselves or who find a practitioner often discover that they require less medication than before the treatment. Some patients even find that they no longer require the medications at all with the EFT tapping.
