Fast Food Dangers - What To Avoid

Everyone knows about the fast food dangers but for those unaware of the reason, it's the type of food most people consume at fast food restaurants, not the actual restaurant and all its food.

There's a new commercial out by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that shows a corpse on a table with the wife crying. In the dead man's hand is a burger and as the camera pans to the man's feet, the golden arches magically appear above them. Then the audience sees a picture of the golden arches with the words, "I was lovin' it." The commercial ends by telling you "Tonight, make it vegetarian."

What the commercial is trying to tell the public is about fast food dangers. However, it misplaces the message by focusing on one chain and one product, the lowly hamburger. It neglects to mention that eating at home can be equally hazardous.

Food Choices

Fast food dangers come from the selections people make at the restaurants and also from the lack of a wide variety of foods. For a healthy diet, you need to have many different colors of food, not just tan, brown and shades of brown. That doesn't mean that corn chips of different colors make your diet balanced.

Fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients. The phytonutrients are often the same substances that give the fruit or vegetable their color. For instance, carotene gives carrots and other veggies their orange color. The carotenes also help the body fight cancer, eye problems and other diseases besides converting to vitamin A. The phytonutrients offered in fruits and vegetables varies and to be healthy, you need them all.

What to Avoid

Fast food dangers come from the selections that people make. Often they stick to the routine fries, burger and a soft drink. Besides the lack of nutrients, the foods are high in cholesterol and trans fats so they also clog your arteries and cause heart disease.

However, many people cook the same way at home so it doesn't matter whether they eat out or eat in, they'll have a greasy, low nutrient meal. Consider the popular southern breakfast of biscuits and gravy.

White gravy is flour, spices, fat and water. Biscuits are the same, sans the water. There is no color variation or additional vitamins to this meal. Throw in some fruit juice or a piece of fresh fruit and you'll make it a little higher in nutrition but it's still high in fat.

When you eat in a fast food restaurant, make healthy choices. While most restaurants don't offer a complete selection of vegetables, at least eat the ones they do for a healthier body and you'll watch the dangers of a fast food restaurant melt away.

Avoid the burgers, fries and other fried foods and focus on the grilled foods, bunless, of course, and the salads. If they offer salads with apple and cranberries or those apple fries, use them as part of your meal for a healthier you. You don't experience the fast food dangers when you use your head and eat wisely.
