Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome with no known cause or cure and is characterized by severe chronic pain and may be accompanied by other symptoms including abdominal discomfort, headaches, insomnia, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual problems, and temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction syndrome, cognitive or memory impairment, and restless leg syndrome.
People who suffer from this painful disorder turn to a variety of treatment options in both the traditional and the alternative realm. This include drugs to relieve pain, sleep problems, abdominal discomfort, and/or depression; exercise; dietary modification, stress reduction; and alternative medicine.
Although herbal remedies for fibromyalgia are limited, St John's wort, however, is the only herb that can be used for a long period of time to address the chemical imbalances associated with fibromyalgia. Other fibromyalgia herbs are usually used for short-term relief of pain.
