Herbal Remedies for Anxiety

The following are herbal remedies that may help control anxiety symptoms, relieve panic attacks, and promote relaxation. However, before starting any of these remedies, you need to check with your doctor to rule out other medical problems and conventional drug and herb interaction.


California poppy with corydalis Corydalis formula from Spanda. Take as directed. Treats anxiety without drowsiness. Do not use California poppy if pregnant
Chamomile Tea. Drink 1 cup three times a day. Relieves allergy and inflammation that aggravate anxiety.
Fennel Tea. Drink 1 cup before or after meals. Relieves gastroentistinal symptoms of anxiety.
Ginger plus ginkgo Tablets. Take 3,000 mg twice daily, with food. Ginkgolide tablets - take 240 mg once daily. Reduces anxiety by increasing the oxygen flow to the brain.

Do not use Ginkgo if you are taking blood thinning medications, e.g., Plavix,
Coumadina, Aspirin. Talk to your doctor before having any type of surgery. 
Ginseng Panax ginseng tincture. Take as directed on label. Helps prevent anxiety during drug withdrawal.
Kava Kavapyrone tablets. Take 60-120 mg daily. Do not take more than 120 mg. Relieves muscle tension and stops pain.
Avoid if you are nursing or pregnant. Increases the effects of alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers.
Passionflower Tea. Take 1 cup 3 times a day. A calming agent that causes less drowsiness than prescription drugs.
St. John's Wort Tablets or capsules. Take as directed. Helps with depression and restores emotional stability.
Do not use St. John's Wort if you are taking prescription antidepressants or any medications that interact with MAOIs. Use with caution while pregnant. May cause sun blisters if out in the sun for a long time.
Scutellaria Tablets. Take 250-500 mg 3 times daily. Stops muscle cramps at night.
Do not use Scutellaria if you have diarrhea.
Tilden flower Tincture. Take 1-3 tsp (4-12 ml) with water 3 times a day. Reduces the risk of migraine attacks during anxiety.
Valerian Valepotriate tablets. Take 50 mg 3 times a day. Relieves panic attacks at night.
Mandarin Oil Press mandarin peel to produce aromatic oil and use in bath, rub on skin, or use in massage or aromatherapy. Diffuse 5 drops of mandarin oil with 3 drops of bergamot oil in an aroma lamp to help relieve stress.
Feverfew Drinking meadowsweet tea or extract may relieve headaches related to anxiety.

Do not take if pregnant. Stop taking if having symptoms nausea and mouth sores.

Precautions

* Avoid mahuang or ephedra -- this can exacerbate anxiety. * Recreational drug like marijuana can cause anxiety attacks.
