Organic Food Advantages

gardenHome >> Organic Food Advantages

You don't need to be growing organic food to reap the benefits of eating organically grown products.

To fully understand its advantages, you are going to need to learn more about organic food in general, what it is and what it has to offer you.

What it is?

In the simplest terms, foods that are grown or processed organically without the use of any pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilizers, growth-stimulating chemicals, food additives, radiation and are free from human or sewage contamination are considered organic.

Livestock that are free from antibiotics, growth hormone and genetic engineering is also considered organic.

When choosing your organic produce, look for vegetables and fruits that are at the peak of ripeness.

These have more vitamins and enzymes than those foods that are overripe or under ripe, or foods that have been stored for any length of time.

How to Clean Your Produce

Running water and a brush are probably what your produce needs before you get it ready for the table. But, if your produce is not organic, you need to wash it more thoroughly to get rid of any chemical residue.

Scrubbing the produce with a soft brush and soaking it in water for ten minutes will help rid the chemicals. You can also try using non-toxic rinsing solutions, which are available in your health food store.

If the produce is waxed, wash it thoroughly and then peel it to remove the wax -- washing, soaking, and scrubbing will not do it for you.

Why You Should Eat it

berriesBecause it is naturally grown -- one of the most important organic food advantages according to some experts is the higher nutritional content that organic food offers.

The produce has more vitamins, enzymes and antioxidant properties. It has also fewer toxins, better quality than conventional produce, and is believed to taste better.

When you are eating food certified as organic you do not have to worry about toxic chemicals being used which is important because these chemicals are linked to reproductive abnormalities, immune system damage, and damage in developing nervous system and brain.

Remember that you don’t have to go crazy all at once. Take baby steps if you are currently not eating organic foods, by slowly adding a couple of foods at a time to your diet.
