What is Anxiety?

What is anxiety? This is often asked by someone who is feeling sad and uptight, and the uneasy feeling is not going away, and is taking over what used to be the person's sweet life. Anxiety is often just a normal and healthy emotion. We all feel nervous and anxious every now and then. However, when these feelings become overwhelming and are interfering with our daily lives -- It is not normal.

Each person is different, but in general, anxiety attack may show the following emotional and physical symptoms that may last for a short period of time and go away when the situation passes.

Physical Symptoms of Anxiety Attacks

Physical symptoms include excessive sweating. Some individuals develop twitches because of the constant worrying. These people often have headaches, muscle tension, and they become irritable at small provocations. They may also develop a feeling that they are out of breath, dizzy or lightheaded.

People with anxiety disorder often feel that they have a lump in their throat, irregular heartbeat, problem swallowing, and lack of energy.

Emotional Symptoms

These symptoms include inability to concentrate, feeling irritable or agitated, feeling sad all the time, fearing that something bad is going to happen, or feeling on edge.

Who gets it?

Anxiety disorders can affect many people including children and teenagers. Some develop phobias and panic disorders. Phobia is a strong, involuntary and irrational fear of a known situation, object, or place that poses little or no actual danger. Panic disorder appears when a person has periods of sudden and unexpected attacks of terror when there is no clear cause or danger.

Symptoms of panic disorder include pounding heart, shaking, sweating, dizziness, faintness, feeling flushed or chilled, tingling or numbness of hands or feet, nausea, chest pain, or smothering sensations. A person having panic attack may fear of losing control or of impending doom.

Anxiety disorder is never fun but when it begins to interfere seriously with regular living and you begin revolving your lifestyle around it, you know there is a problem and you need to get treatment for it.

Speaking to your doctor is the first step, probably your first question to him or her would be what is anxiety and they will be able to properly give you the information that you need and assess your condition and make you a bit more educated on the matter.

They may also refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist who is more specialized in this area and who will be able to work one on one with you to help you feel more comfortable with your condition and find the best methods of relieving the symptoms that are associated with it.
