What Is Reiki Therapy?

Just like ancient forms of energy healing from India, Japan has an ancient technique called Reiki therapy. However, it uses many of the same practices found in many other disciplines such as meditation, aura healing and crystal use for charka healing. It involves using the body's energy to heal another or even your own body. The ultimate goal of Reiki is to restore the balance of the energy flow within so the body heals itself.

The Name Tells You What It Does

In Japanese, the word Reiki represents the energy of life or the universal energy that is in and around everyone. The first part of the word, Rei, means "free passage." Another definition is "free spirit." The second part "ki" indicates the universal energy. In other words, Reiki gives free passage to the universal life energy, thus healing areas that require it.

How to Use Reiki

You can use Reiki for many different things. You can use it to help relax, detoxify the system, find and remove energy blocks to areas, increases your healing energy and the frequency of your bodily vibration.

How Reiki Differs from Faith or Spiritual Healers

In both Reiki and Faith healers, the practitioner uses the hands to release energy. In Reiki, the patient pulls the energy from the source. However, in spiritual or faith healing the healer provides the energy and releases it. The difference is the actual participation of the recipient in his own healing.

Is There More Than One Reiki?

What is reiki therapy covers the roots of all Reiki. Reiki started from Tibet thousands of years ago. The original studies used symbols and sounds but many different methods of healing developed from these. In the 1800's, Dr. Mikao Usui discovered the original form of healing and after an exhaustive 21-year investigation into Buddhist Sanskrit teachings including sounds and symbols for energy; he had an epiphany through a metaphysical experience. It proved to be the start of his system of Reiki.

The focus in the Usui Reiki System is on meditation and healing. However, he had several students that modified the system, creating less emphasis on the meditation and more on the energy techniques. One of these was Chujiro Hayashi. Because of one of his American followers, Hawayo Takata, the Reiki system came to America in the 1930s.

Like many energy systems, Reiki users and masters add their own twist or include other practices in their Reiki technique. Because of this, there are many different schools of Reiki now in practice. Each one offers some slight difference but the basic belief, opening the body's own healing pathways, remains the same.

At a Practitioner

Unlike massage therapy, when you go to a Reiki practitioner, you remain fully clothed. The person offering Reiki services asks you to lie down and then place his or her hands either lightly on the body or directly above it in close proximity. The practitioner then uses anywhere from 12 to 15 different hand positions to aid in the energy flow. He or she may hold the position for as long as 5 minutes until he feels the flow of energy from his body stopped. Normally there are a minimum of four sessions offered with each one lasting anywhere from a half hour to an hour and a half. Reiki may also be use as a preliminary for surgery or during surgery.
