restless leg syndrome - rlsRestless leg syndrome or RLS is a condition that is characterized by uncontrollable urge to move the body in order to try and relieve the odd and strange sensations in the legs, and sometimes in the arms.

Its symptoms are hard to miss and are things that can seem to disrupt your entire life in one way or another. This is because the discomfort of the RLS syndrome can and will affect its victims anytime of the day or night.

Signs and Symptoms
  • Uncomfortable sensations in the legs resulting to irresistible urge to move.
  • Restlessness - expressed in movement and activity
  • Worsening of symptoms when relaxing
  • Symptoms getting worse in the evening and early in the night
For some people, this condition just seems to come out of nowhere and there really is no reason that can be found for why it came about.

And as quickly as it appeared it can also vanish without a trace as restless leg syndrome is still considered a medical mystery in some aspects. 

Others will find that some medical conditions are commonly associated with the development of secondary RLS including iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy, sleep apnea, varicose vein, uremia, diabetes, thyroid disease, folate deficiency, peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson's disease and certain auto-immune disorders such as Sjögren's syndrome, celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

There are also certain medications such as anti-depressants, over the counter cold medicines, anti-nausea, seizure medications and more that are believed to cause or worsen the syndrome.

RLS can also be worsened by surgery of any kind, however back injury or surgery can be associated with causing RLS.

Getting Help For The Suffering
Currently, there is nothing available on the market that can cure the RLS symptoms but there are medications and creams out there that claim to be able to help out.

For those who suffer on a daily basis with RLS symptoms, the thought of something helping even just a little is amazing. It is important though to keep in mind that not every single product currently available will work for your symptoms.

This means that you may have to try out a few different products before finding the one that can help you out some. While these products may not completely take away the symptoms restless leg syndrome, they are still worth it if they even help just a little.

For those who understand what is restless leg syndrome and how it affects or prevents sleep or regular daily activities, medication may be required. Your doctor will be able to prescribe you with effective sleep-aid medications.

The Non-Drug Musculoskeletal Approach
There is a non-drug musculoskeletal approach that was developed in London that appears to produces relief of symptoms in 80-90% of patients. The specific types of manipulation in this practice appear to reduce excessive sensory input and relieve symptoms.

This non drug treatment approach is free of the side effects associated with many of the conventional drug treatments.

Depending on how bad the symptoms are will also be a factor in how much relief the different products are able to help.

Along with medication and creams --  there are a lot of different home remedies that claim to be able to help place restless leg syndrome symptoms under control.
