Rolfing Benefits - What is Rolfing?
Rolfing theory is much the same theory as chiropractic medicine, instead of focusing on the imbalances and misalignment of the musculoskeletal system; it focuses on the fascial web, the internal connective tissue and balance with the gravitational field of the earth. By realigning this structure, we attain more balance with the earth and through that, eliminate the stress caused by the pull from the gravitational force. This allows the body to function better and rid itself of disease and illness.
What is Rolfing?
Just like other alternative healing techniques, the basis of the theory is that the body has a miraculous ability to heal itself and regain health in the right set of circumstances. With energy healing, a blockage of energy causes the problem. With Rolfing, external factor cause misalignment of the exterior connective structure that holds the internal organs and leads to illness.
The Constant Change
The fascial web, the structure that holds the body together, changes constantly. If you damage your knee, it builds extra material to support your weight. Some times, your body makes too much of a good thing. In this case, the excess material it creates doesn't stabilize the body at the knee but makes it difficult to move and reduces your ability to function. That change causes other bodily changes, leading to more damage because of an altered posture or set of movements.
The Rolfing Creator
The practice received its name from its creator, Dr. Ida P. Rolf. She noted that there's continuity of the system, rather than simply a group of tissues connected to another group of tissues. She created a series of techniques to realign, release and balance the entire system that holds all our bones, nerves, muscles and organs. Through realignment, the body can heal itself and have freedom of movement.
Rolfing Benefits
Studies show that Rolfing allows the body to conserve energy by making the muscle movement more efficient. It also reduces stress on the body. One study showed that Rolfing changed the spinal alignment of patients with a sway back, severe lordosis. Other studies showed that it increased neurological functioning.
J. Cottingham, a Rolfing Practitioner completed two studies in Rolfing. The first study was with S. Porges, PhD, Director, Developmental Assessment Laboratory, and Professor, Department of Human Development, College of Education, University of Maryland at College Park and K. Richmond, MHS, Physical Therapist, Christie Clinic. It showed that Rolfing helps reduced stress, brought a relaxation response. The second study was in cooperation with Stephen Porges but also included Todd Lyon on the team. This study showed that Rolfing altered the body structure in a positive way and reduced sway back.
A study by Hunt and Massey, from the department of Kinesiology at UCLA; Weinberg from the Department of Psychology at UCLA; Bruyer, Healing Lights Center and Hahn Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the State University of New York showed that Rolfing allowed the body to be more efficient thus giving the patient more energy. It also gave the patient a sense of well being, enhanced memory recall and emotional calmness.
