Zinc Supplement Information

fishZinc is an essential mineral, which helps in the prevention of fat oxidation. It is an ingredient of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and is needed to maintain proper levels of Vitamin E in the blood and helps in the absorption of Vitamin A. In addition to its antioxidant properties, zinc plays a role in prostate gland function and the growth of the reproductive organs.

Other Benefits

It helps prevent acne and regulate the activity of oil glands. It is required in the synthesis of protein and the formation of collagen, and stimulates the healing of wounds -- this is the reason why wound nurses are advising their patients to take zinc everyday.

It also protects the liver from chemical damage, plays an important role in bone formation, and promotes a healthy immune system.

What happens when there is a deficiency?

A deficiency may lead to loss of the senses taste and smell; fingernails become thin, pale, and develop white spots.

Other signs of deficiency include acne, growth impairment, delayed sexual maturation, fatigue, hair loss, high levels of cholesterol, impotence, problems with night vision, increased susceptibility with infection, memory impairment, infertility, slow wound healing, skin lesions, recurrent colds and flu, and prostate problems.

Sources

Its natural sources include meats especially liver, nuts, eggs, seafood, and cereal. It is also found in brewer's yeast, dulse, fish, kelp, lamb, legumes, lima beans, oysters, pecans, poultry, soy lecithin, soybeans, sunflower seeds, torula yeast, pumpkin seeds, and whole grains.

burdockIts herb sources include alfalfa, burdock root, cayenne, chamomile, fennel seed, chickweed, dandelion, eyebright, parsley, wild yam, mullein, skullcap, sarsaparilla, nettle, rose hips, hops, and sage.

Zinc levels may be lowered by diarrhea, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disorder, diabetes, drinking hard water, or the fiber consumption that causes it to be excreted through the intestines. A large amount can be lost through perspiration.

Comments

  • Take iron and zinc at different times, both supplements can interfere with each other.
  • Daily intake should not exceed more than 100 milligrams. While daily dose less than 100 milligrams can enhance immune response, doses of more than 100 milligrams can lower the immune system.
*The Academy of Sciences' Recommended Dietary Allowances are 12 milligrams for women and 10 milligrams for men daily.
